ABOUT ZION HILL BAPTIST CHURCH

Zion Hill Baptist Church has a mission to win people to Christ through evangelism, develop them to spiritual maturity in discipleship, cultivate relationships by fellowship, allow them to visibly express God's love to others in service, and magnify God's name in worship.

We strive to evangelize by communicating God's word-sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible in our community and throughout the world.

We will educate God's people in helping members develop towards full Christian maturity and train for effective ministry as we promote personal and spiritual growth through Bible teaching.

We will assimilate God's family be encourage, support, and pray for each other as members of the family of God, as we share our lives together.

We will demonstrate God's love and serve unselfishly, meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those in the Church, our community, and the world.

OUR HISTORY

We give thanks to God for those who laid the foundation of this household of faith. In the year of our Lord, 1870 the God who rules this universe in His all-knowing wisdom and power, touched the hearts of a few believers in the Mayo, Virginia community and inspired them to establish church.

After hearing about the talk of this new church in the community a wealthy white plantation owner, John H. Harris, donated approximately one acre of land on which to build this church. The land was located between what was known as the black pond and the red pond.

In 1872, under the leadership of Rev. Will Crawley, this body of believers erected the first building. Many people from this area and surrounding areas continued to join, even some as far away as North Carolina. Most of them had to walk or ride wagons to church.

As the members continued to give praise and worship to the Almighty God, they were blessed with two other pastors, Rev. Jake White, and Rev. S.E. Ragland. Our fore-parents told of the good times they had in church. Singing could eb heard from a distance as their hearts overflowed with joy. The bare floors, "pot-belly" stoves, narrow benches and oil lamps did not hinder them from worshipping God. As we look back, we should realize just how far the Lord has brought us. We have truly been blessed and our praise should constantly ring our loudly as we enjoy the benefits from the prayers of our ancestors.

During the administration of our Pastor, Rev. Nathaniel Bauldwin, the Lord blessed us with the vision to reconstruct or edifice in 1975. We burned our mortgage and laid the cornerstone for this building in 1981. We have been blessed tremendously throughout the years to continue to improve the comfort of our worship facilities.

In 1997 until 2007 we were under the leadership of the Rev. Thomas Bolden. after several years without a Pastor, we were blessed with another leader. In the year of 2009 we became under the leadership of Rev. Rodney L. Dillard. We are continually growing spiritually and in number. Under Pastor Dillard's leadership we have paid off our paved parking lot, added on new landscaping, installed an alarm system, added on a playground, started a children's nursery, a mentor role model program, and we also have added a white picket fence and a memorial.

Still the best is yet to come for He has great visions, goals, and expectations of doing the work of the Lord in our lives, in our church, and in the community. He is also striving to make us better Christians in every aspect of our lives and we are grateful to God.

If there was ever a time that we need to praise the Lord, it is now! May we forever keep our eyes on Jesus, the perfect, Son of God, the One who sacrificed His precious blood on Calvary, so that we could be saved and have life more abundantly right here on earth. Let us stay humble and grateful to God who has blessed us!
